"During the Exile the Jews assembled for worship and the study of God's Word (Ezek 8:1; 14:1; 20:1). Although they could not offer sacrifices at the temple in Jerusalem, they tried to live lives that were pleasing to God by obeying his laws and by offering prayers instead of and in place of sacrifices. Sometime after the Exile, Jewish assemblies developed into synagogues, an institution that spread throughout the Roman Empire wherever Jews were found. Each synagogue had a copy of the Hebrew Bible in the form of a scroll, which was kept in a wooden box. At the synagogue, the people prayed, worshiped, and listened to the reading of God's Word. These services emphasized a personal relationship with God." (NIV BIBLE DICTIONARY, The Time Between the Testaments - Social Developments, ¬© 1989 Zondervan)
